Monroe Historical Society receives grant to preserve 100 years of the
Monroe Monitor

The Monroe Historical Society recently received a $1,000 grant from the
Snohomish County Community Heritage Fund for storage and preservation of its
Monroe Monitor newspaper collection. The Heritage Grant Allocation will
provide funds for the Historical Society to preserve over 100 years of the
Monroe Monitor newspaper going back to 1899 that is housed at the Monroe
Historical Museum on Main Street.

The Historical Society regards its collection of the local newspaper as a
primary research source for information on local history. Preserving over
100 years of weekly issues is key to accomplishing the Society's mission of
gathering, preserving and sharing Monroe's past.

To adequately care for the fragile newspapers, they need archival
containers, protective folders to prevent further deterioration of the
newsprint during handling, and suitable shelving. The grant funds will be
used to purchase supplies to protect, box and store the newspapers in an
organized and safe environment in the museum. Volunteers will catalog the
weekly issues and transfer them into containers.

The Historical Society also received a tourism grant from the City of Monroe
for development of exhibits within the museum, including permanent displays
on Old City Hall, Main Street, First Residents, and others.

A third grant was received from the Tulalip Charitable Fund to apply toward
pre-construction expenses for the renovation of Old City Hall. The Society
is still seeking $75,000 to pay for costs for an architect, permits and
engineering. For more information about the Monroe Historical Society and
museum, call (360) 217-7223 or visit www.monroehistoricalsociety.org
