Historic barns topic of March 18 Monroe Historical Society meeting

The Monroe Historical Society invites the community to its annual membership
meeting and potluck Thursday, March 18 at the Tualco Grange. Washington
State Architectural Historian Michael Houser will present information on
historic barns in the area and share details about Washington's Historic
Barn Register Program which was established in 2007.

Currently 408 Washington barns are listed on the Heritage Barn Register,
including the Doughty Farm, Bill Morgan Farm, Bounds Barn and Todd Farm of
Snohomish, and the Goebel Hill Farm of Granite Falls. Residents are
encouraged to bring suggestions for landmark barns in the Monroe area for
consideration for an initial assessment by Houser. To be eligible for
listing in the Heritage Barn Register and to be eligible to apply for grant
funds for preservation, barns must be over 50 years old and retain a
significant degree of historic and architectural integrity.

Houser will be available to answer questions after the presentation. He
serves as the Architectural Historian for the State of Washington and runs
the National Register, Washington Heritage Register, and Barn Register
Programs. A native of Washington, Houser's current focus of study is post
WWII housing.

A potluck dinner will be served at 6:30 followed by a short business meeting
and the presentation. Please bring a dish to share.

The Tualco Grange is located at 18933 Tualco Road, just outside Monroe
across the Lewis Street Bridge. All ages are welcome. For more information,
