Join the *Monroe Historical Society June 17 *for dairy history, dairy
ambassadors and free strawberry shortcake

The Monroe Historical Society invites the community to its annual Strawberry
Social Thursday, June 17 at the Tualco Grange. *Washington State*
*University Dairy Extension Agent Ned Zaugg will present the history of
local dairies, and the Washington State Dairy Ambassadors will be on hand*
*to talk about the health benefits of dairy products. Free strawberry
shortcake will be served at 6:30 p.m. before the presentation.*

Starting in 1895, Monroe had nine operating creameries, but most operated
for only a few years. Creameries processed bulk raw milk from local
farmers into milk, cream, butter and cheese. They included the Austin
Brothers Creamery, opened in 1900 at the corner of Kelsey and Powell
Streets, and the Fern Bluff Creamery which operated from 1913 to 1935 and
had a fine reputation for quality butter and cream. The Carnation
Condensery operated from 1908 to 1928.

The three teen Dairy Ambassadors represent the Dairy Farmers of Washington
and promote milk as an important part of a healthy diet. Zaugg
provides educational programming to Snohomish, Skagit, Island, Clallam and
Jefferson County dairymen. He coordinates area 4-H and other youth
dairy activities.

A king-sized quilt recently sewn by the Queen Bee Quilters of the East
County Senior Center will be on display and raffle tickets available for
purchase. The quilt raffle is an annual fundraiser for the Monroe Historical
Society.

The Tualco Grange is located at 18933 Tualco Road, just outside Monroe
across the Lewis Street Bridge.
All ages are welcome. For more information, contact the Monroe Historical
Society at 360-217-7223 or visit www.monroehistoricalsociety.org.
