Join the Monroe Historical Society Sept. 16 for a presentation on the

history of the Monroe Correctional Complex

The Monroe Historical Society invites the community to its quarterly
membership meeting Thursday, Sept. 16 at the Tualco Grange. This quarter's
topic is the history of the Monroe Correctional Complex, formerly called the
Washington State Reformatory.

Superintendent Scott Frakes will be the guest speaker. The Correctional
Complex marked its centennial in May of this year with an anniversary event
and rededication of the cornerstone originally laid in 1910. It is the
state's second-oldest and second-largest correctional facility after the
Walla Walla Penitentiary.

Dessert will be served at 6:30 p.m. before the presentation at 7 p.m. Please
bring a sweet treat to share.

A king-sized quilt sewn by the Queen Bee Quilters of the East County Senior
Center and a smaller lap-size quilt will be on display and raffle tickets
available for purchase. The quilt raffle is an annual fundraiser for the
Monroe Historical Society.

The Tualco Grange is located at 18933 Tualco Road, just outside Monroe
across the Lewis Street Bridge. All ages are welcome. For more information,
contact the Monroe Historical Society at 360-217-7223 or visit
