Community invited to Monroe Veteran’s Day event Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.

After a 50-year hiatus, Monroe is staging a community Veteran’s Day event
Friday, Nov. 11 to recognize its past and present veterans and those on
active duty. The community is invited to a 1 p.m. presentation at Traveler’s
Park, also called Veteran’s Memorial Park, at the intersection of U.S. 2 and
Main Street.

Monroe native and Washington State Representative Kirk Pearson will speak;
and veteran and Monroe resident Tom Parry will emcee and recognize the
veterans in attendance, as well as local families who have lost a family
member in war.

That morning flags will be placed on Main and Lewis Streets by local
veterans. Boy Scout Troop 148 and members of the Monroe High School ROTC
program will also be involved in the day’s activities. The Monroe High
School band will provide patriotic music and 1956 Monroe High School alumnus
Bill Clark will play Taps. All veterans and current service members are
invited to attend, in uniform if possible.

After the ceremony, the community is invited to the Monroe Historical
Society Museum at 207 E. Main St. to view a special Veteran’s Day exhibit.
Military artifacts will be on display and veterans will be on hand to share
stories and answer questions. The Monroe Historical Society records oral
histories and encourages veterans to come in and share their memories for
future generations.

The Veteran’s Day event is sponsored by the City of Monroe, the Monroe
Chamber of Commerce and the Monroe Historical Society. For more information,
please contact the historical society at (360) 217-7223, or Butch Ohlsen at
(360) 794-7664.
