Community invited to celebrate the history of racing in Monroe at

Sky Valley Speedway event June 30

The Monroe Historical Society is commemorating the *history of stock car
racing in Monroe with a salute to the Sky Valley Speedway*, Monroe’s
original dirt race track and the local visionaries who carved it out of a
hillside back in 1957.
The free commemorative event is *Sat., June 30 at the Evergreen State
Fairgrounds in 4-H building 501*. The building will be open from 2 p.m. to
4 p.m. to view displays and meet old friends. A presentation of the history
of racing will begin at 4 p.m. followed by an open-mic session for early
racers, mechanics, trophy girls and audience members to share memories of
the track and racing in Monroe. Tables will be available for displaying
photos, trophies, scrapbooks and other memorabilia. Old cars from the era
are also expected to be on display.

Drivers and fans met at the Sky Valley Speedway on North Kelsey Street
every week from 1957 to 1977 for a dust-raising good time. The event
coincides with Evergreen Speedway’s Summer Showdown Event June 28-30.
Discounted tickets to Saturday night’s grandstand races will be available
to those attending the Sky Valley Speedway event in the afternoon.
Evergreen Speedway has special events planned to commemorate Sky Valley
Speedway’s legacy, including introducing some of the early drivers and
trophy girls during the night’s races.
