*Hidden Treasures of Washington Museums*

There are artifacts in the lofts and storage rooms of Washington that you
will never see. How could this be?

Seattle journalist Harriet Baskas, author of *Hidden Treasures: What
Museums Can't or Won't Show You,* speaks at 2 p.m. Saturday March 15 in the
Everett Public Library Auditorium, 2702 Hoyt in Everett. Her appearance is
sponsored by the library and by *Humanities Washington*.

Only about ten percent of a museum's collection is on display at any one
time. But why do some items *never* get displayed? For example, there is
the chunk of the pilgrim ship * Mayflower*, found in a metal casket within
a cornerstone of Peace Arch Park in Blaine. And the battered red van driven
by the iconic proto-Grunge band Soundgarden, now owned by the Experience
Music Project in Seattle. Neither will be displayed anytime soon, if at
all. Baskas explains why.

Baskas has written a number of books about such oddities, *Washington
Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities & Other Offbeat
Stuff*<http://www.amazon.com/Washington-Curiosities-3rd-Characters-Roadside/dp/0762761199/ref=la_B001K8KBXW_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1392250091&sr=1-4>,
and *Atomic Marbles and Branding Irons: Museums, Collections, and
Curiosities in Washington and
Oregon*<http://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Marbles-Branding-Irons-Collections/dp/091236579X/ref=la_B001K8KBXW_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1392250091&sr=1-6>*.
