Everett Public Library's award-winning Podcast Committee on August 1 debuts a new podcast historical series entitled "Smokestack Soundbites. A new podcast will debut each month for several months. Hear them at www.epls.org/podcast.
The series incorporates music, sound effects-and sometimes humor-to dramatize incidents in local history. The first in the series, "A Shooting Affray at the Gold Leaf Saloon" focuses on Northwest Room historian David Dilgard's search through Snohomish County history for a "High Noon"-style wild-west shootout. The closest analog he could find is an 1895 episode of drunken gunplay in Snohomish's notorious Gold Leaf Saloon, in which inebriated bartender William "Omaha Bill" Wroth guns down equally soused saloon patron William "Texas Jack" Kinney.
Library staff members reenact the story using real court transcripts, and the Everett-based musical group The Wild Snohomians provides the series theme music, appropriately entitled "Another Day." The debut podcast is 25-minutes long.
Everett Library's podcast committee has received several historical and educational awards for past podcasts, including the Public Education Award by the Washington State Department of Historic Preservation in May 2009 for the library's production of the Evergreen Cemetery Podcast Tour, and two Malstrom Awards, given by the League of Snohomish County Heritage Organizations.
