Everett Public Library on Oct. 2 releases its third Smokestack Soundbites historical podcast, dramatizing the story of an election day murder in Sultan in 1892.

Sultan in 1892 was a wild town, a product of silver deposits and the Great Northern Railroad, whose passage made commerce with Puget Sound possible. Election Day 1892 saw the big drama of the presidential election between Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland, but in Sultan a smaller drama was taking place when a bartender refused to serve two thirsty roughnecks, the bar being lawfully closed due to the balloting.

Library staff members read the script, which is drawn from early county histories and contemporary newspaper articles. Dramatic emphasis is provided through music and sound effects. Hear the podcast at www.epls.org/podcast/soundbites.asp.

Everett Library's podcast committee has received several historical and educational awards for past podcasts, including the Public Education Award by the Washington State Department of Historic Preservation in May 2009 for the library's production of the Evergreen Cemetery Podcast Tour.
