<p class="MsoNormal">Everett Public Library on Sept. 1 releases its second Smokestacks Soundbites historical podcast, dramatizing the little-known story of early white settlement on Tulalip Bay.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Cambria","serif""><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Cambria","serif"">The podcast production begins with a quotation from the diary of British Navy Capt. George Vancouver describing the area, continues through the creation of the water-powered ripsaw mill that anchored
the settlement, and ends in 1914, when the last traces of the mill disappeared. <o:p>
</o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Cambria","serif""><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Cambria","serif"">The sawmill was built in 1853 and operated profitably for a few years. The Point Elliot Treaty of 1855 established the Tulalip Tribe in the area and led eventually to a U.S. government buyout
of the sawmill owners, who then relocated. After the Civil War, the mill resumed operation under the auspices of the Indian Agency. The story of the settlement is told through diaries, newspaper articles, and official Indian Agency reports. Library staff members

Preservation in May 2009 for the library’s production of the Evergreen Cemetery Podcast Tour, and two Malstrom Awards, given by the League of Snohomish County Heritage Organizations.
